doujin freaks
...be your true self
Welcome to Doujin Freaks! Whether you already know and love doujin culture or are curious about it, this is the place to connect with fellow fans and creators!
what is doujin?
Doujin refers to a Japanese subculture of self-publishing and DIY creations. The most famous example of this is doujinshi, or self-made Japanese comics that are often (though not always) parodies of existing cartoons or games. However, doujin works can encompass almost anything, from books to games to music to figurines.
what is doujin freaks?
Doujin Freaks is a network of fans and creators who wish to bring the spirit and practice of doujin to the West. So far that's concentrated on the East Coast of the US; I myself, moon, am from central Maryland. However, my goal is to grow Doujin Freaks and encourage people to plan and hold local events no matter where they are!
what are the rules?
Doujin Freaks has a few rules and guidelines we'd like our members to abide by...
- Be kind to one another. Disagreements are one thing, but no bullying, shaming (incl. kinkshaming) or harassment are allowed. This is very much a "live and let live" space when it comes to shipping, etc. (To spell it out: we support full freedom in fiction and do not support harassment.)
- Keep NSFW content in age-restricted areas, and use warnings judiciously.
- Doujin Freaks events != Artist Alley. You can bring a couple prints or some accessories to sell, but the majority of your showcased items should be doujin works: comics, zines, games, music, etc.
- This group is anti-genAI. I know genAI has been used in some doujin works, such as the Touhou series, but Doujin Freaks embraces the handmade and hand-curated. That said, I won't be scrutinizing peoples' works for evidence of genAI use, either. Just adhere to the spirit of the group, please.
- Catchall rule: I reserve the right to timeout, kick or ban people for any reason, even if you're not specifically breaking the rules.
how do I join?
You can join in a few different ways! First, and probably easiest, is by joining the Discord server, where we all chat and plan events!
If you prefer to get only occasional updates, you can sign up for the Doujin Freaks newsletter...as soon as I get it set up. Watch this space!
